As with any new year, or any time at all really, there are several games that I would love to see announced or be playing, but that’s not what I want most this year. This year I would much prefer the more human aspect of the videogame industry we all love to get its act together.
Nothing else demonstrated how divided we are amongst ourselves than what happened over December. The Stop Online Piracy Act and the Protect IP Act drew a clear line in the sand between those who simply love games and those who see it as nothing but a number that must tick upwards.

Oh Japan, why have you fallen so far? You saved the home video game market after we westerners screwed it up with the Atari. You created the first real console war amongst yourselves between Nintendo and Sega. Westerners didn’t even have a real entry into the console war until the Xbox, so how is it that everyone seems to think you’ve lost your touch by the next generation?

08.11.11 Amidst a summer of Super Hero movies, John Favreau released his new comic book based movie that has quite a bit less power armor. While the creation of Cowboys & Aliens the comic book is an interesting and slightly shady one, the movie managed to avoid the controversy and thanks to Favreau’s enthusiasm, pick up significant attention.

I don’t think I’ve ever heard as many condescending comments towards any competitive activity than those towards eSports. While I hear quite a few condescending comments about ‘normal’ sports from my gamer friends, I hear so many more about eSports from such a wide variety of people that it would appear the chances of them becoming an accepted sport would be little to none. It’s all about public perception and the lack of acceptance for eSports is born of the same ignorance as the anti-video game laws. What we need is an information blitz

08.9.11 In my first letter I looked at Nintendo’s past and how they reached the position they are in. My second letter looked at 2011 and what’s gone right and wrong. In this final letter I look towards the future and offer this fan’s opinion on keeping loyalty.
Dear Nintendo,
I implore you to actually think about how you are going to move forward. There have been so many missteps that I wonder how many more you can possibly take. We saw what happened to Atari and we don’t want that to happen to you. While I would like to compare you to Sega, I know there is a growing opinion that you should follow in their footsteps and become a purely software company. I like your innovation in hardware, but it seems that you have yet to actually take advantage of it.
